Mezzotint on Aluminium: a new tool to play with!

I had a search going on Ebay for a Mezzotint Rocker. The search has probably been running for a couple of years and I think only once or twice did it turn up this rather obscure printmaking tool and at full price, which is not cheap. So when one appeared at half price last week, I could not resist… This post is mainly a series of photos of my experiments with mezzotint on a piece of aluminium (copper being the traditional material for this printing technique). If you would like to know more about how mezzotint – a slightly obscure…

The Phallacy of Glastonbury Tor - drypoint print

The Phallacy: You’ll never look at Glastonbury Tor in quite the same way again…

…at least, that is what several people have sad to me already, having seen most of this series of etchings and drypoints! Here is the latest, slightly biblical, offering. This brings the total up to 10 for the 2015 calendar pictures. I have in fact (I think) finished printing all 12 as of today, but the last two may need some additional colour, so I will post them in due course… Another Drypoint print on aluminium, and for those who like the techy details, the tonal difference between the figures and apples in the foreground and the greyish background is…

Medusa Calendar: May. November, June, December

Charity Auction 21st March, and my Medusa etchings

12 Medusa Etchings from the 2014 calendar are up for auction – see below for details. As some of you know it has been a little wet this year: Actually this photo makes it look all romantic, but it’s a lovely photo that Sarah O’Connell was kind enough to send me so I have used it. The reality has been rather messier: The floods have not quite been at my doorstep, maybe a hundred yards away, maybe two hundred… so this is a cause somewhat close to home. Now the floods are receding, but after a couple of months or…

The Mistress Plan - drypoint on aluminium

The Mistress Plan

When I posted ‘The Master Plan‘ I said there was an obvious sequel, and  here it is: ‘The Mistress Plan’. And they are indeed very obvious… This is of course another in my series of 12 views of Glastonbury Tor, for the 2015 calendar – you can catch up with the work to date here: https://nancyfarmer.wordpress.com/category/artwork-by-title/2015-calendar/ Technically it’s another drypoint, created the same way as The master Plan. I am quite getting into drypoint, though I couldn’t resist a proper mezzotint rocker selling for half price on Ebay the other day (they almost never come up, ever – I think…

views of the tor - the master plan

The Master Plan

from 12 Views of the Tor: 2015 calendar What more can I add? This is the Master Plan: the title pretty much sums it up. There is an arch villain, an arch villain’s cat, an evil checklist…. and no James Bond to be seen. It’s obviously all going to work without a hitch… For those interested in the technicalities, this is another print entirely in drypoint, starting off with sandpapering the aluminium plate with very coarse sandpaper, then burnishing the surface where I didn’t want the background scratches. Then the trusty pointy tool drew the rest. There is an obvious…

The Spelling Animals do 'Charlie'

Charlie’s Rats

Another niece, another birthday… As I have said before, as far as the Spelling Animals are concerned this is the Year of the Non-specific Rodent Thing. But that only applies to the nieces and nephews, who all get a go at the same animal or there are bound to be arguments. Suddenly I have been asked for a few of these on a commission basis: over the last fortnight I have also encountered spelling cats, sea creatures and winged lizards. There seems to be a modest demand, so I have put up a listing on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/181733790/ I will be interested…

The Home-brew and the Full Moon on St Michaels Tower

Drunk in charge of a Broomstick

…or ‘The Home-brew’ on Glastonbury Tor This is another for the 2015 calendar of course. I wanted a couple of views of the Tor that were less than obvious. This one is so obscure you would probably never recognize it as connected with the Tor at all, but it is in fact the very top of the tower on the Tor – the remains of St Michael’s Church. Or at least that was the idea. Despite numerous photos my brain refused to believe the actual shape of the crenelations, and without reference to any actual evidence I corrected my sketch…

The Hunt at Glastonbury Tor - etching and drypoint

The Other Boxing Day Hunt…

More from 12 views of Glastonbury Tor I have been getting along faster with the calendar than I have with this blog: here is the corner of my newly-designed studio/gallery – now equipped with with hanging rails, but as you see still lacking the odd cable clip or two. I am three quarters of the way there with printing the pictures! The print below is number 6 to appear on this blog – if I show you all of them together what will I have to say in the next few days? This is probably my December picture – ‘The…
