The View of Glastonbury Tor

The final calendar pictures, and about time too!

I do apologize for not getting round to showing you the last of the Glastonbury Tor pictures yet! First, I wanted these with a little colour, and then on a whim I started a new blog, and although it was not meant to be time-consuming, everything consumes time… So, here are the final pictures for the 2015 calendar, ’12 Views of the Tor’: ‘The View’ is mostly etching, and ‘The Decoy’ is mostly drypoint. ‘The View’ is an afternoon-tea sort of print, but an Angel’s eye view… Angels of course sit around on clouds and drink tea all the time,…

The Phallacy of Glastonbury Tor - drypoint print

The Phallacy: You’ll never look at Glastonbury Tor in quite the same way again…

…at least, that is what several people have sad to me already, having seen most of this series of etchings and drypoints! Here is the latest, slightly biblical, offering. This brings the total up to 10 for the 2015 calendar pictures. I have in fact (I think) finished printing all 12 as of today, but the last two may need some additional colour, so I will post them in due course… Another Drypoint print on aluminium, and for those who like the techy details, the tonal difference between the figures and apples in the foreground and the greyish background is…

The Mistress Plan - drypoint on aluminium

The Mistress Plan

When I posted ‘The Master Plan‘ I said there was an obvious sequel, and  here it is: ‘The Mistress Plan’. And they are indeed very obvious… This is of course another in my series of 12 views of Glastonbury Tor, for the 2015 calendar – you can catch up with the work to date here: https://nancyfarmer.wordpress.com/category/artwork-by-title/2015-calendar/ Technically it’s another drypoint, created the same way as The master Plan. I am quite getting into drypoint, though I couldn’t resist a proper mezzotint rocker selling for half price on Ebay the other day (they almost never come up, ever – I think…

views of the tor - the master plan

The Master Plan

from 12 Views of the Tor: 2015 calendar What more can I add? This is the Master Plan: the title pretty much sums it up. There is an arch villain, an arch villain’s cat, an evil checklist…. and no James Bond to be seen. It’s obviously all going to work without a hitch… For those interested in the technicalities, this is another print entirely in drypoint, starting off with sandpapering the aluminium plate with very coarse sandpaper, then burnishing the surface where I didn’t want the background scratches. Then the trusty pointy tool drew the rest. There is an obvious…

The Home-brew and the Full Moon on St Michaels Tower

Drunk in charge of a Broomstick

…or ‘The Home-brew’ on Glastonbury Tor This is another for the 2015 calendar of course. I wanted a couple of views of the Tor that were less than obvious. This one is so obscure you would probably never recognize it as connected with the Tor at all, but it is in fact the very top of the tower on the Tor – the remains of St Michael’s Church. Or at least that was the idea. Despite numerous photos my brain refused to believe the actual shape of the crenelations, and without reference to any actual evidence I corrected my sketch…

The Hunt at Glastonbury Tor - etching and drypoint

The Other Boxing Day Hunt…

More from 12 views of Glastonbury Tor I have been getting along faster with the calendar than I have with this blog: here is the corner of my newly-designed studio/gallery – now equipped with with hanging rails, but as you see still lacking the odd cable clip or two. I am three quarters of the way there with printing the pictures! The print below is number 6 to appear on this blog – if I show you all of them together what will I have to say in the next few days? This is probably my December picture – ‘The…

close-up of drypoint print - the blackberry harvest

The Blackberry Harvest

From 12 Views of (Glastonbury) Tor… Another print for the 2015 calendar is done – this one was printed from the plate I featured in my post on ‘imaginary drawing’: https://nancyfarmer.wordpress.com/2014/02/07/drypoint-and-imaginary-drawing-more-views-of-the-tor/. That post shows me in the middle of creating the image on the aluminium plate, with sandpaper, burnisher and pointy tool. All that guesswork… but I am quite pleased with how this one came out now. Sandpaper is my new favourite thing, which is odd because having been a jeweller I used it for days on end and never discovered a liking for it before! Here is the Blackberry…

Herne, Pan and the weather at the Tor

Herne, Pan and the Weather

…more views of Glastonbury Tor Even gods and spirits of nature get fed up with the weather sometimes, though I admit I missed a trick on this one. This is another for the 2015 calendar ’12 Views of the Tor’, and the sketch was done on about the 1st of January. A few weeks later I would have thought it more appropriate to put this pair in a boat, as Somerset seems to be rapidly filling up with water. They didn’t call Glastonbury the Isle of Avalon for nothing… So, apologies to local readers: this will not seem quite as…

drypoint on aluminium plate

Drypoint and imaginary drawing… (more Views of the Tor)

I am in the process of creating the plate for another print for my 2015 calendar, “12 Views of the Tor”. This is another one that I have decided to complete entirely in drypoint, so I thought I would take a break and show you some of the fun problems with drypoint… First the sketch: Harvest time, but the blackberries are proving hard to steal… the hapless fairy looks like she will loose her stocking, if not her dress and half her haul! When I roughly shaded the Tor and its tower in dark behind the main subject it was…
