A MURDER of Crows

A quite different Murder of Crows

I already painted ‘A Murder of Crows‘ of course, but this is a Spelling Animals version. For once I’m drawing a few Spelling Animals pictures that are not commissions, because I have a solo exhibition coming up in July, and I’ll never have time to get one more more considered painting done. These are fun to do, and don’t take nearly as long as the Flower Fairy paintings I was planning on. Drawing in pencil, and the crows are about 3 inches high. I have also spelled ‘A Cat may look at a King’ in cats and ‘Home is where…

Commissioned portrait: Jude, Al & Star

Jude & Al’s portrait

From my blog you’d think I haven’t done much work lately and only post sketches to cat-of-the-day, but this impression is partly because I’ve completed two commissioned portraits this year which had to remain sectet. One of them can now be revealed! THis is Jude and Al, and their dog Star. In pencil and gold leaf, and the composition designed for an oval frame. As you might expect, people don’t generally ask me to draw or paint their portrait unless they have something special in mind.

Cat-and-dead-rat sketch 3

Memento Mori

Not-so-cute cats (mostly). Do not fear, there are no dead cats in this post, but perhaps rat-owners might be advised to look away and to skip this one. Continuing with my little series of cat mezzotint prints, I felt it was important that I didn’t end up with a series entirely comprising nice cute cat pictures. Cats are lovely, but lets have the Compleat Cat. Therefore, I thought at the very least there should be the classic cat-washing-bum pose, and at lease one dead rat. We have chickens and where they live has become so badly undermined with rats we…

Spelling Animals - chickens

How to spell with chickens

That’s another species trained up and added to the lexicon of Spelling Animals: Spelling chickens. You wouldn’t think it was possible, but I think they came out quite nicely. They will be available on commission soon, but for now I’m taking a break for a week. Any enquires: please email me! (see menu at the top).

Thoughts on Winter - in pencil

Thoughts on Winter

These are a few very much work-in-progress (or even work-barely-started) sketches as I think on a picture for en exhibition entitled ‘Winter’. I wouldn’t have posted these so early, but if I don’t post something else soon, this blog is going to look as if all I do nowadays is Spelling Animals! (There are more of those to come…) I am thinking around naked winter twigs with just a few red berries hanging on after the leaves have gone and, because I like people-things, translating them into the idea of a gathering of Dryads. Stark black against a winter white…

Spelling Greyhounds

Spelling in greyhounds

One more Spelling Animals name I was asked for recently: Sherri, in greyhounds. Specifically, these are Sherri’s greyhounds, but it was a surprise present for her. I have never done any spelling with dogs before and they move and stand rather differently to cats, so I had to re-tune my spelling abilities to accommodate dogs. Dogs are not as bendy as cats, but greyhounds are skinny, which is very useful, in a Spelling Animal. However dogs are so much more variable in shape than cats that some breeds would be quite a challenge so I’m a little hesitant about advertising…

Detail of pencil drawing 1

Feline mayhem!

“Noisy guests arrived, and scared the pets” …is the title of this new drawing I just finished. I’m not sure where this one came from, except that I have probably spent too long on Facebook watching compilations of videos of cats, and I had this image in my head of one where a cat that was trying to look big and scary and was arching its back so far that its front feet were right off the ground, and it was walking along like that. And so I spent most of a day failing to convince myself that this idea…

Frolicking Fairies II

Misbehaving, as clear as Black and White…

I have one more silhouette drawing to show you, which I completed before the Octoparty – I snuck the latter in out of sequence because there really have been a lot of fairies lately, and more to add to the blog. Some years back I did a series of drawings called ‘Fornicating Fairies’… they need no more explanation than that. I then added a drawing to the series where, well, you just couldn’t quite see if…they weren’t… or were they…? You get my drift. I called that one Frolicking Fairies. There was much frolicking. This is along the same lines:…
