Frolicking Fairies II

Misbehaving, as clear as Black and White…

I have one more silhouette drawing to show you, which I completed before the Octoparty – I snuck the latter in out of sequence because there really have been a lot of fairies lately, and more to add to the blog. Some years back I did a series of drawings called ‘Fornicating Fairies’… they need no more explanation than that. I then added a drawing to the series where, well, you just couldn’t quite see if…they weren’t… or were they…? You get my drift. I called that one Frolicking Fairies. There was much frolicking. This is along the same lines:…

Octoparty - almost pure black and white print

The Octoparty

This is my latest drawing, another silhouette. I drew a couple of silhouette-type compositions a couple of years back for my ’72 Fairies’ calendar, and found them a bit difficult to get started with, but an interesting idea that I always meant to get back to (and it did help that out of that collection of drawings and paintings those ones were the ones that sold first). So, here I am having another go. I still find this an interesting compositional challenge that in some ways is actually trickier, and just as time-consuming, as working out a composition for an…

Two's Company - pencil silhouette drawing

Two’s Company

One of the first of some silhouette drawings that I have been doing. I have to say that I thought this picture was rather too sweet for me, but when I posted it on my Facebook page it got more likes than anything has for a very long time, so there, maybe I should be sweeter! I’m not going to change though 😉 Personally, I particularly like the dandelions in the grass, being a bit of a fan of dandelions. I cannot currently think of an excellent title for this so it is going by the name of ‘Two’s Company’ unless…

'Three's a Crowd' - drawing in pencil and gold leaf

‘Three’s a Crowd’

Finished artwork in pencil and gold leaf. This is a relatively simple piece, expanding on the series of ‘gold fairies’ I have been drawing. I am rather aware that Somerset Arts Weeks is fast approaching, so it is not the time to get started on a long complex piece of work that will not be finished in time. Now, in this lovely summer weather, it seems a good idea to fill gaps in the gallery walls with some simple gilded glamour. Of course, my pictures are never THAT simple, but I am doing my best to get a few new…

Spelling Rats

Rats, sweet rats…

Meanwhile, in my occasional capacity as custodian of some highly trained Spelling animals: Rats seem to be the in thing lately. I did a name in rats for a customer and she came back instantly with a request for this picture too. Meanwhile I am doing another name in rats with the special request that they be ‘more skanky’ … yep, I can also do Skanky Rats. These, however, are not those rats 🙂

first piece of gold leaf on the gold size

How to apply gold leaf to paper – part 1

I took some step-by-step photos of this ‘gold fairy’ as I did her. Couldn’t say I’m an expert gilder, but I have had a bit of practice by now and I’ve learnt one or two things, so I thought I’d write a little explanation for anyone interested. Here (below) is the outline drawing. The circle is to be entirely gilded. To gild on paper you need to stick the gold on with something. ‘Gold size’ is what the proper glue is called that the gold leaf is stuck on with, but the actual sort of gold size you use depends…

Rodent Spelling Animals in watercolour and pencil

The Year of the Non-specific Rodent Thing

My first post of the year, but in Spelling Animals we are still in last year. Like the Chinese New Year, the changeover doesn’t happen for some time… So, being as this is the year of the Non-specific Rodent Creature, here is Georgia’s card, done in a flurry of ultra-busy some time before Christmas and never posted on the blog.

Life Drawing 16/10/13 h

Naked people in Pawlett…

Spent yesterday life-drawing… Even though I can hardly ever get to the life drawing classes, I still seem to have quite a few drawings around now. Occasionally I frame up a collection of them, but have a lot of framed stuff at the moment. So as an experiment, I have just spent some time putting these up for sale on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/nancyfarmer?section_id=5955658 They are all in pencil, and except for the sketch above they also have a little tone added in pastel, applied on a cotton bud. This, to date, is the best medium I have found that will just…

the spelling animals

More Spelling Animals…

A large proportion of my pictures are in an exhibition in Ilminster (amply demonstrating that I already have a lot of pictures), and my studio is undergoing a major overhaul,  so actual new artwork here, is thin on the ground for the moment. Hence, I only have more Spelling Animals to show you… I quite like the Spelling Animals though. Here is Josie’s card, in pencil and a little watercolour:

Life Drawings at Pawlett 16.3.13

What with posting about my pet plagiarist, I didn’t have time to post these drawings last weekend, but I did finally get to another Life Drawing session. These were mostly not the length of poses that I like best – the 4 short 5-minute poses are the sort of thing I like, but then the same seated pose for… er…  what seemed like a very long time, meant I had to move round and draw from different angles, which explains the two pairs of near-identical poses. But still, it did for once mean I put some effort into actually drawing…
